Certificate in Patchwork & Quilting
This course enables you to learn how to design and then make various items of patchwork, quilting, and applique.
- The design aspect looks at colour, shape, form, line and texture. Don't worry if you haven't done design work before as the tutor will guide you through these sessions
- In the patchwork and quilting sections you will learn various techniques including block patchwork, folded patchwork, hand and machine patchwork, foundation piecing, machine and hand quilting, as well as sashiko and kantha. The applique section covers basic applique techniques as well as reverse applique, shadow applique, broderie perse, knotting, tufting and cut work
- Techniques used and developed by the individual tutors will also be taught as an added bonus
Five items of P&Q will be made including:
- A wall hanging
- An item for interior decor such as a cushion, tie backs, a table cloth etc
- An accessory such as a bag, a hat, a belt etc
- A box or container
- A quilt, either for a bed, a cot, or a wall
The principal tutor will be Annette Morgan, who will cover the design elements of the course, dyeing and technique workshops, tutorials, and oversee project work. Marion Barnes will teach all the needlework side of the course, covering basic patchwork, quilting etc, to advanced techniques.

Certificate in Machine Embroidery
This course enables you to learn how to design and then make various items composed of machine embroidery.
The design aspect looks at colour, shape, form, line and texture. Don't worry if you haven't done design work before as the tutor will guide you through these sessions.
In the stitch part of the course we will look at:
- Working with free stitches and machine stitch patterns. Dissolvable fabrics will be used
- Making braids and cords
- Investigating tassels, bindings, piping, loops, prairie points and fringes
- Finishing - looking at edges, bindings and sleeves
- Working with felt, plastics, and leathers
- Using beads and sequins
- Computer generated work, papers, foils, meshes, knotted, woven, tied, scrunched etc
- Dyeing - in the microwave, procion dyes and using transfer dyes
- Working with paints, printing, and spraying
Five Items of machine embroidery will be made:
- An accessory or set of accessories
- A functional 3D item
- A wall hanging
- An item of free choice
- Three experimental samples

Diploma in Patchwork & Quilting
NB Students who wish to study the Diploma will need to have completed the Certificate in Patchwork and Quilting first, as this course builds on the previously taught techniques in the Certificate course.
This course consists of the following elements:
- Research for Design, using the skills learnt in the Certificate course you will build a portfolio of work on which to base your three sewn assessments
- The sewn assessments consist of a miniature quilt, a 3D item, and a large quilt
- A study of the last 200 years of quiltmaking
- A mathematical design study
- A study of four designer quilt makers
- A body of innovative samples using materials such as paper, plastic, leather, felt, etc.
